A long time ago in a galaxy far far away we started semi-officially supporting Linux and shortly after, Mac. A guide on our forum explained how to install RebirthRO under Linux and this guide applied to Mac as well, with some (significant) modifications. The install process was fairly complex even under Linux, under Mac is was just plain tedious. But, no more! We now have a 1-click Mac OS X application. You simply need to open the DMG, copy the App to your Applications folder, and enjoy! The install is a bit larger than it is on Windows at 4.4GB (3.43GB zipped) but this was unavoidable. The nearly GB extra is due to the bundled Wine and supporting applications needed to make RebirthRO work on Mac OS X.
The only “gotcha” is if you have multiple users on your Mac that want to play RebirthRO. For every user that wants to play it, you’ll have to install it in the Applications folder in the user’s home directory (/Users/<username>/Applications) which you can create if it doesn’t exist. That’s because of RebirthRO’s self-updates and local settings, only the user that installs it will be able to edit the game files and settings. More advanced users can get around this using groups and permissions, but a big upside to multiple installs is your settings (like the last username used, which /commands were active, what chat tabs you had open, etc) are per-user as well.
The installer is still considered beta so don’t risk downloading it if you have a working RRO on your Mac already and have a metered connection. If you don’t have a metered connection, go ahead and give it a spin! We’d especially like to hear from people installing it on a Mac that’s never had Wine or RRO on it before. Get the installer here.
